Frequently Asked Questions

  • Join our Facebook group with 30,000 other women+ hikers! All planned events, both official nonprofit events and unofficial events, are in our Facebook group on the Events page. Anyone can plan an unofficial meetup in the Facebook group, including you!

  • Become a Trailblazer! Trailblazers are monthly donors to our nonprofit that get access to our events calendar and can sign up for official nonprofit events on our website. Learn how to become a Trailblazer here.

  • Official events are planned through our nonprofit. They are organized by our GWHVA Ambassadors across Virginia and always require pre-registration.

Unofficial events are planned meetups in our Facebook group that are organized by our Facebook group members. Unofficial events are unaffiliated with the Girls Who Hike Virginia nonprofit.

  • Our hikes are for women+ hikers of all identities, including trans women, individuals who identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming, persons socialized as women and anyone who identifies as a woman in a way that is important to them, BIPOC communities, differently-abled persons, and hikers of all ages and levels of experience.

While we appreciate the support of our male allies, we ask that individuals who identify as men honor our group's exclusive women+ safe space during our events. GWHVA will occasionally offer events open to everyone – family, friends, children, dogs, and more! – and we'd love to meet you then.

  • GWHVA is a 100% volunteer-run, community-based nonprofit serving women+ in Virginia and beyond. We started as a Facebook Group connecting women+ with one another to enjoy Virginia’s hiking trails together. Today, we are an independent nonprofit organization run by a volunteer Board of Directors and team of Ambassadors dedicated to connecting women+ with the education, resources, and tools they need to enjoy the outdoors.

  • No! Girls Who Hike Virginia is an independently-run 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and is unaffiliated with other Girls Who Hike groups across the U.S.

  • We’re always looking to expand our community of partners! Send us an email at hello@gwhva.org to get the conversation started.
